Robert's Story
Meet Robert
Our newest programme, Cardiac Rehab has been running for almost a year now and Robert was one of the first participants to join us. The programme supports those who have had heart issues to get involved in regular physical activity in a monitored and safe environment.
Robert came to us after major heart surgery and hasn’t looked back, going from strength to strength. He explained: “I had a triple heart bypass, with a pigs valve fitted in my heart and the team at the Derby Royal gave me the details for the programme to help with my recovery and it has been brilliant.
“Twice a week I get to come to the sessions, meet with people who have had similar problems to me and it does us all good.”
The sessions started off slowly, allowing participants to build up their fitness, with each week progressively getting more difficult and ensuring they are challenged. That progression has allowed Robert to feel the benefits and he believes that others have seen them as well.
He said: “I used to go to the gym but I had stopped as I got older but had gotten lazy. Doing it now with a formal side to it now is very good for me. We started off fairly slowly, which was probably the right thing to do and now I feel as though I am getting better for it.
“The thing is we all appreciate the fact we have all struggled and we make sure we put the effort in and it makes us all feel better.”
