Zetterstrom named 2024/25 PFA Community Champion

Zetterstrom with his award

Jacob Widell-Zetterstrom has been named Derby County’s PFA Community Champion for the 2024/25 season in recognition of his dedication to supporting our communities.

The PFA Community Champion Award, highlights players who have made their work with communities and good causes central to their role as a professional footballer.

Since joining Derby County, Jacob Widell Zetterström has made an impact not only through his performances on the pitch but also through his commitment to community engagement. Jacob has embraced every opportunity to connect with the community demonstrating club values in everything he does.

A standout example of his community involvement came during a visit to the Derby Royal School for the Deaf in February. Jacob participated in a variety of activities with students, including relay races, a football match, and a penalty shoot-out. Importantly, he took the time to learn British Sign Language (BSL) from the students and staff, learning to spell his name, say “Nice to meet you!”, and sign “Come on you Rams!” The students even gave him a unique football-related sign name. His openness and willingness to communicate with students of all hearing abilities made the visit especially meaningful.

Speaking about the experience, Jacob said: "Football is the most enjoyable thing in my life and just to experience that with even more people and just see the joy in each and everyone's face, including mine... it was an amazing hour with an amazing group of young people."

Throughout the season, Jacob has also taken part in club-led initiatives such as half-term signing sessions, and he has gone above and beyond to support participants of Derby County Community Trust. Whether it’s responding personally to letters or simply taking time to listen and engage, Jacob has shown genuine care and respect for the community he represents.

Jacob was presented with his award as he returned to the club for pre-season training this week in recognition of his work off the pitch last season.

Everyone at Derby County and Derby County Community Trust would like to extend a thank you to Jacob for his dedication and congratulates him on this award.
