Craig's Story

Meet Craig...
Introducing Craig…
Craig is a participant of Team Talk - a peer support programme designed to provide a safe space to socialise, focusing on males' mental health. Craig has been attending our Team Talk sessions for some time and when asking why he began attending he replied:
"I got involved with Derby County Community Trust after Lucas came and delivered a speech at an event I was at. I was very intrigued, he spoke about depression and how to cope. I didn't know about the work that you did, before I heard Lucas speak."
We asked Craig wha his life was like before we had the pleasure of meeting him: "I had a very bad time during COVID, my wife had a nervous breakdown. I was taking maximum dosage medication for psychosis and anxiety; it wasn't a good time for me. During the pandemic I was looking after my daughter who is autistic, my wife was in hospital, and I was suicidal. I had three friends who kept me speaking, I was in a very bad way.
Craig found a passion for natural remedies and learning what he can use to help benefit his body. Having seen the effects of these, he is enthusiastic in sharing his knowledge with the aim to educate other Team Talk participants:
"I want to share what I have learnt and help other people. I know a lot now about natural therapies. I focused on nutrition, and I know what helps prevent mental and physical health struggles."
Finally, we spoke to Craig about the importance of the Team Talk programme and what he would say to those who are thinking about joining us...
"I love coming to Team Talk, and I look forward to coming. I will miss the group here, I do like having conversations and I like seeing that change in people from when they first come to when they have been here a while. it gives you satisfaction to see them smile.
It makes a difference being with people, talking to people. Being in a room, it might make you feel down, you might not talk for a few weeks but get chatting to each other, you can help; them."
Attending Team Talk has helped Craig as a person, the way he carries himself, his self esteem and how he reacts to different situations:
"When I was young, I couldn't make conversation. I was a real introvert. Now, having knowledge can give you confidence to talk to people. I used to really take things to heart. I am 69 years old this year, but physically and mentally I don't feel like that. I wish I knew what I know now, when I was in my 20's... maybe I wouldn't be talking to you now. Don't leave it too late."
Craig refers to our Monday evening Team Talk sessions at the Community Corner from 7pm - 8pm. We have a number of sessions to accommodate those interested in joining us.
