It was our third trip to Portugal for the annual Algarve Walking Football Cup where teams across Europe competed in over 50s and over 60s group tournaments.

Two teams and staff members flew to Faro, Portugal, on Thursday 3rd October where they settled into their accommodations at Browns Sports and Leisure, and prepared for a two-day tournament.

The first set of fixtures began on the Friday with 16 over 50s and 20 over 60s teams in total competing in the group stages of the tournament. Derby County Over 50s played walking football squads from Portugal, France and a Manchester City team before finishing  3rd overall. The Trust’s Over 60s played another set of teams originating from Portugal, Birmingham, Exeter and Liverpool; they came 2nd out of the 20.

The sun shone down for Saturday’s ‘knock out’ round which took a toll on our players who are used to playing in colder weather! The Over 50s team lost three games but won their final match against Portugal, placing them 15th overall. Whilst our Over 60s saw a similar result, winning one game out of four, and also placed 15th overall.

DCCT staff members who accompanied the team were hugely impressed with the team’s performance. Luke Wilkinson, Health Team Leader said, “Both groups played really well considering the heat got up to nearly 30 degrees – they enjoyed playing against teams from around the world in a great setting.

It really shows the popularity and impact that walking football has worldwide.”

The Trust launched their first walking football sessions back in 2017 and it soon became a well attended weekly programme. Thanks to our ongoing sponsors Drinkaware for all their support.
