THE latest contest to find sporting stars in Derby has been launched by Derby City Sport Forum.

The Forum, which promotes sport, sporting facilities and sporting opportunities, is looking for the cream of sporting achievers in Derby, including youngsters and those with disabilities.

The winners will be lauded at an event to be held in Derby Council House on Thursday, October 10, when the guest of honour will be the Mayor, Councillor Frank Harwood.

There are 12 awards: 11 categories for the year– junior sportsman, junior sportswoman, and junior disabled sportsperson, junior team of the year, and young sports leader/coach(all under 18 years), sportswoman, sportsman, disabled sportsperson, club, team, community coach – and a lifetime service to sport award.

The awards are the only ones across all sports exclusively for Derby only. Superstar swimmer Adam Peaty, who has just won four medals – including Great Britain’s three golds- at the World Aquatic Championships in South Korea, is a former winner of the awards.

More information is available by logging on to the forum website at or and entry forms have to be returned by 7th September.

Forum chair Ian Cotter said: “We are delighted to again be hosting these awards which recognise those people in the city who regularly compete and win at local, regional, national and international level in their chosen sports. Equally, we wish to celebrate those ‘unseen heroes’ who daily work behind the scenes to help people achieve success.”

Last year, as deputy mayor, Councillor Harwood, a former football referee, joined a walking football session to open the forum’s 2nd Festival of Sport in the city. He played a game for over 65-year-olds and scored a goal at the ripe age of 80!

He said: “I am delighted to have been asked to come to the Derby City Sport Forum awards and meet the winners, whether competitors or coaches.

“It is important that those who spend so much time involved with their different sports receive due recognition for their efforts and success in competition. These awards also encourage others to take up the baton and follow in their footsteps.”
