National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government funded programme for 15 to 17 years-old, it is an opportunity for the participants to embark on exhilarating challenges, make a mark on the local community and build skills for work and life.
The Grad of the Year 2018 is determined by programme staff, core team members, workshop leaders and peers voted for NCS participants who have excelled in all areas of the NCS ethos. 12 participants were selected out of 535 to go through to the finals, they were invited to submit a written proposal of a social action project they would like to complete at The Jubilee Academy in Nakuru, Kenya.
The top four proposals were invited to present their ideas to a panel of judges where the winner was selected. The Grad of the Year 2018 will win an all expenses trip to Kenya in August 2019, and will fundraise to complete their proposal.
This year’s winner was Thomas Unsworth!
Thomas won because of his compassionate and charismatic approach throughout the entire NCS programme. His inclusive nature ensured his entire team were supported throughout social action.
Tom has a keen interest in drama and admits that drama has assisted him in building his confidence in all aspects of his life. Tom proposed to build a stage at the Jubilee Academy in Nakuru, Kenya to give the youngsters the opportunity to develop confidence and self esteem through performing arts. Tom’s passion shone through during his presentation and it is clear to see that he truly cares about enriching the lives and raising the aspirations of the youngsters at the school through performing on a real stage.
