Active Choices is our programme to help aid the recovery of substance and alcohol misuses, which is in its sixth year and has assisted over 750 participants. Comic Relief has funded a large proportion of the project and with Red Nose Day coming up on the 15th March, we’d like to showcase the positive effect the programme has on our participants.

Originally from Barcelona, Derby resident Mireia struggled with substance abuse for many years. She sought out help from Drug and Alcohol charity, Phoenix Futures, where she began her journey to recovery. Six months ago, Phoenix Futures referred Mireia to the Trust as they were concerned that her recovery may deteriorate after finishing treatment.

Mireia had major anxiety and concerns about starting Active Choices, and very nearly decided against coming to sessions where she lived just five minutes away from.

However, she was persuaded by another Active Choices participant, and friend, Jimmy Brentnall. Jimmy encouraged Mireia and supported her to come to the sessions which he knew she would benefit from. One thing that attracted Mireia to the sessions was the link to Derby County Football Club. Mireia is a huge football fanatic and was excited to learn that Active Choices have teams that play in the Social Inclosure League, where she now plays as a Goal Keeper for a mixed team.

Six months on and Mireia’s confidence has improved tremendously; she has a strong recovery network with people who support, understand and care for her. She’s also become one of the Trust’s volunteers working with our badminton class and has had a real positive influence on the session.

Mireia had this to say about her life since joining Active Choices:

“I’ve met some amazing people and I’m no longer on my own and isolated. I now have all the help and support I need. I’m very grateful that Derby County Community Trust are there for people like me.”
