On Wednesday 7th March John of Rolleston Primary School headed to Leeds as they prepared to represent Derby County in the regional finals of the EFL Kids Cup.

The school won the chance to represent the Rams after coming out on top at our local final in January against 60 primary schools from across Derby and Derbyshire.

A day at Wembley was the prize for the team that would progress and following two successive Kids Cup victories for teams representing Derby County, the boys were confident of replicating their predecessors achievements.

On the day they were grouped against the hosts Leeds United, Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland.

After some impressive performances which equated to four wins and one loss the they progressed to the semi-final against Hull City.

Despite a strong performance, an early goal from Hull meant the boys from Rolleston were always chasing the game. It finished 1-0.

Sheffield Wednesday went on to win the competition, winning 1-0 against Hull City in the final.

Following the day, Richard Mansfield from the Derby County Community Trust said:

“The boys from John of Rolleston should be very proud of themselves. They have represented the school, Derby County Football Club and themselves brilliantly throughout the competition and on another day it could have ended differently.”

He added: “Our thanks go out to the Leeds United Foundation for their hospitality today and congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday who will no doubt have a great day at Wembley.”
