On International Women’s Day we’re celebrating the fantastic women from across our programmes. A group of women who embody the spirit of the day and are truly inspirational, are Tracey Jefferson, 43, Lorraine Butcher, 49, Della Coglan, 47, and Sarah Spencer, 53.

Despite only being in their forties, Tracey, Lorraine and Della are all at different stages of overcoming breast cancer, and are using our Active Recovery programme to aid their recovery, increase their fitness levels, improve their co-ordination and regain confidence. Sarah is a member of the programme as she is supporting her husband, who is in remission from cancer.

Active Recovery encourages participants to maintain fitness, eat healthily and rest properly whilst undergoing or recovering from treatment. Cancer can affect so many different aspects of people’s lives, so the programme aims to boost self-esteem and mental health alongside ensuring physical fitness.

Tracey said, “Active Recovery is just that. I have benefited enormously from this worthwhile project and would highly recommend it to anyone in my position. Many thanks to the team.”

Lorraine added, “This is the best thing I have done since I became ill. I feel good, my back problem has gone and it lets me go at my own pace.”

Della said, “Active Recovery encouraged me to take control of my health and get stronger and fitter. The leaders are so motivational and have helped me so much that I feel ready to go back to work.”

Sarah finished by saying, “I can’t thank the Derby County Community Trust enough. The classes came at the perfect time for my health and that of my family.”
