On Sunday 29th September, the Trust’s most recent fitness challenge concluded with a 11-a-side football match against another local Midlands team.

Can You Kick It was launched in June, and invited those with a BMI of 28 or over to take part in a 12-week fitness challenge with the Trust. Aiming to get participants fitter and to minimise health risks. Participants received 1:1 support from our health team, with access to our Monday Night Football and weekly paid fitness sessions included in our Everybody Active classes, such as BoxFit and HiiT style workouts.

An extra added incentive was available which meant that those with the greatest percentage of weight loss would earn their place to represent Derby County in a head-to-head 11-a-side match against Aston Villa Foundation’s own weight loss team.

After 12-weeks of the programme being launched, our participants had been working hard to loose weight and better their health. The day then came when Derby County met the Aston Villa team on Sunday 29th September. The match took place at the Derby County Football Club Training Centre where former Derby County player, Marc Edworthy, was on hand as Manager of the Rams team.

At full-time it was the mighty Rams who came out on top with 10 – 2 victory!

Both teams played a great game, showing quality sportsmanship and were able to play at a better level of fitness than they would have done 12 – weeks a go.

One participant from Derby County’s Can You Kick It programme said:

“It’s been great being involved, love Monday night footy. Lost nearly a stone from playing an extra game a week. I can’t wait for the next opportunity to play. Well done to all involved!”

The programme has now finished but all participants will be carrying on their fitness journey by attending weekly football and other exercise sessions.
