The Derby County Community Trust travelled to Brighton on 20th October to take part in a Mental Wellbeing tournament hosted by Albion in the Community.
The tournament, which aimed to raise awareness for mental health projects, saw 18 teams take part, consisting of football club community schemes from across the country along with local mental health initiatives. The Derby County Community Trust team were represented by participants from the Active Choices programme, which focusses on encouraging a healthy lifestyle and behavioural change.
The six-a-side competition kicked off with a group stage in which DCCT found themselves up against the likes of Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and other local projects.
Five wins and only one goal conceded saw the side win their group and progress comfortably to the quarter finals.
Local side ‘Lawn Court’ were the opponents and proved to be stiff competition. Goals from Marek Hyde and a last minute winner from Luke Wilkinson saw DCCT seal a 2-1 win to progress to the Semi Finals.
Crystal Palace B were the team to stand between DCCT and the final in what turned out to be a very scrappy affair, some good defending and counter attacking saw the Derby side score twice through Jon Fairbrother to progress to the final with a 2-0 victory.
Crystal Palace A were the opponents for the final fixture of the day. It was a confident performance in which the side dominated possession and took their chances. Derby won the final 2-0 and went on to lift the Mental Wellbeing Cup!
Following the win, Physical Activity and Health Advisor Jack Bell said:
“We’ve had a great trip to what was a really enjoyable and well organised tournament, a huge thanks goes out to Albion in the Community for inviting us.
“The lads played really well throughout the day and it was obviously fantastic to win the tournament, however these competitions are about much more than that, we hope that today has helped in raising awareness for mental health initiatives.”
